Vari-focal cameras utilize a vari-focal lens, which adjust between a small and large lens value. An example of a vari-focal lens is an 3.5 - 8mm lens. The lens can be manually adjusted for both depth and focus. The purpose of a vari-focal lens/camera is to zoom in and focus on a specific object or area.

Applications include, but are not limited to:

Observing a cash register - to see the difference between a $1 bill and a $10 bill, or to see what buttons are being pressed on the register.
Observing an entry way - to get a clear and close image of an individual entering or exiting the area.

Cameras in this category utilize vari-focal lenses, and are referred to as vari-focal cameras.
